THAT OUT OF THE WAY. Did anyone else know about how Kirk Cameron is CRAZY?
This was from a debate on Nightline between Cameron and fellow evangelical Ray Comfort and two atheists known as the Rational Response Squad. Cameron and Comfort are part of an organization called “Way of the Master.” Their show is a man on the street style set up where they confront folks, sometimes until they attack them. It’s the typical, “Have you ever told a lie? Have you ever stolen anything? YOU ARE A LYING THIEF! REPENT!” thing that fundie crazies do.
This debate was supposed to be about scientifically proving or disproving whether or not god exists, without using the Bible or faith. In the first part, Comfort quotes the Bible and the ten commandments. In this video, Cameron forgets the whole “debating with science and fact” thing and tells a nice story in an effort to convert the audience.
Now I spent a good afternoon watching these videos, because sometimes I like to stroke my atheism with reinforcement: “Good atheism. You are so smart and Christians are dumb. Isn’t it nice to be right?”
But you know what? The members of the RRS were actually much bigger douchebags than Cameron and Comfort. The Way of the Master gang may be science hating, delusion loving crazies, but at the end of the day that makes them happy. The well spoken, smarter RRS guys aren’t happy unless they’re saying “NO YOU ARE WRONG, AND NOW WE WILL MAKE FUN OF YOU FOR IT.” Now, Nightline showed clips from the Way of the Master show, which again, is predicated on Cameron and Comfort going out and shaming passerbys into religion – also douche-y.
Belief is personal. You believe what makes the most sense to you (or what helps you sleep easy at night). And even though what makes the most sense to me isn’t what makes the most sense to everyone, I don’t really care about making other people believe the same thing.
Until those other people (Christian fundie crazies) start getting all political and not letting certain citizens get married.
